Protections for people with pre-existing conditions, provided through the Affordable Care Act, are critical for millions of Americans living with chronic diseases, including people with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
However, a recent court decision in Texas threatens protections for people with pre-existing conditions. For the diabetes community, quality, affordable health coverage is at risk. Without these protections, people with pre-existing conditions were previously denied insurance coverage, charged higher premiums, and had benefits limited.
Sign our petition now to tell Congress that 1.25 million Americans with T1D – a serious, chronic disease – need continued access to comprehensive health insurance at rates similar to those without pre-existing conditions. Urge Congress to preserve protections for pre-existing conditions, and tell others to join us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #Coverage2Control.
We, the undersigned people with diabetes and their supporters, call upon Congress to:
Preserve current law protections for people with pre-existing conditions. JDRF advocates across the country urge Members of Congress to publicly commit to defend health coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions.
There has long been broad, bipartisan agreement in Congress to support protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Moreover, making it easier for people with chronic conditions like diabetes to manage their disease is better for the economy, as it keeps them healthy and productive and reduces overall healthcare costs. Quality, affordable coverage helps people with a chronic disease avoid costly emergency room visits, inpatient admissions, and other complications.
Individuals with pre-existing health conditions should have access to comprehensive health insurance at rates similar to their counterparts without pre-existing health conditions.
For many years, our community was in the position where we had to battle with insurers that were allowed to deny coverage or charge significantly more to people with pre-existing conditions. We want to ensure that no one has to fight these same battles again.
Coverage is a fundamental part of healthcare – and affordability and choice should be, too. Throughout the Coverage2Control campaign, JDRF advocates from across the United States have called for coverage that works for people with T1D.
Join JDRF, make your voice heard, and urge Congress to protect the healthcare needs of the T1D community.
